Coming from the city that Rap Pages once described as an undiscovered “Mecca of hip-hop,” you will find B-Boy Mafia. Native to the foundations of the culture, this group fills the gap where tradition and what used to be the most imperative elements of music production have faded into the horizon: which is now a progressive movement.
As recently featured on Def Jam’s Unsigned Hype, Vol. 1, the all-star group is introducing a new release for the third quarter 2010 entitled, Legendary (maxi-single). A sonic resume of past accomplishments with several of their song titles implanted between metaphors. Also included are underground bangers “Case of Emergency” (an ominous foreshadowing of the rap game with a hyper-aggressive scratch chorus) and “Barwarz” (a tribute to old school rap group Audio Two) where Milk D is emulated to a tee. Accompanying the digital release is Legendary, The Mixtape which will also be available with ten plus previously unreleased songs.
B-Boy Mafia aka ‘The Maf’ came together through a resurging b-boy scene in the 90’s which expanded into other elements of hip hop. By 1994, such mediums as djaying and mcing were the norm for participants and the make shift recording equipment from upstairs in the attic became full blown production studios. Strongly tied to a vintage and timeless sound, B-Boy Mafia’s music is still carefully crafted to maintain relevance in today’s market. Inspired by old school flavor and new school technique, you will discover very intricate word play, street corner swagger, mafia vernacular, turntablism, call and response, comedy skits/interludes, battle raps, party rocking, beat box, and plenty of controversy.
Even though there are several extended family members of the group, (hence the moniker “Mafia”) the two original artists are Tony Mansini (also known as B-boy ManSon, Mance One, Tone-Mance) and Tarantino (also known as TNT, Joe Padre, Joe Podge). The group’s first release entitled B-boy Mafia Volume 1 started out as a compilation series with various artists as producer/dj Tarantino sought to make a name for himself on the dj scene displaying mixing, scratching, and song selection for a specific target audience. After an important meeting with his partner Mansini, they decided to edit the feature to display their own music by mixing in some personal material. Around the same time, other local producers caught wind of the group's unique sound and started sending them beats through the Armory Hip Hop Shop in downtown San Diego. This is when they came across a Primo-esque beat by producer J. Supreme which later became “S.D. Streets”. Featuring Blackran of LPSD, the song aired regularly on commercial rap station Z90 during Dj Rage's primetime weekend slot. From then on, B-Boy Mafia was catapulted onto the scene, incrementally getting involved in bigger, better projects. B-Boy Mafia Volume 2 never had the chance for pre-production, let alone release, as Cros 1, owner of San Diego based hip-hop shop “The Armory” recruited them to start a mix cd series entitled Armory Massive to promote the shop and release of future music projects. A win-win for all parties involved. This came to be the first of much collaboration between artists backed by the Armory Massive collective. Not long there after, B-Boy Mafia released a song-for-song mixed (mixed live like a dj would) album entitled SD Streets. The album was dedicated to friend and graffiti artist Paris One who so tragically passed in 2006. For the past decade, B-Boy Mafia has been consciously developing their sound into what it is today. Having produced five mixtape-albums, they have been able to secure a strong fan base on a worldwide scale. B-Boy Mafia is the first group to have combined the excitement and energy of the live mixtape with the orchestration and impact of a true album.
B-Boy Mafia has forged a unique career path with their marketing mix. It was first launched on a global, grassroots level with the help of the hip hop event promoting vehicle known as Freestyle Session in conjunction with The Armory. The Armory, as a retail store known worldwide, reaches as far as Chicago, London, and Tokyo. Its first store started in San Diego. The hip hop group associated with it quickly found themselves connected to a global hip hop scene. Strong proponents of the B-Boy Mafia at home proved to be a great asset abroad, where the loyalty of childhood friends began to pay dividends. Producer Tarantino explains, “Every time there was a major hip hop event in other countries, someone from the crew would be attending” which added clear and real representation to the group. The Maf definitely took advantage of this by pressing copies of their latest cd's for promotional give-aways at each event. These cd's played a seminal role in gaining world-wide attention, ultimately ending up in the hands of some of their most valued fans spanning from North America to Europe, South America, Asia, and Australia. B-Boy Mafia has moved over ten thousand units hand-in-hand, and are now introducing themselves on a digital distribution platform.
Within a tightly knit hip hop community worldwide, there is strong diversity that demands various style preferences where geographical rivalry and critics, both professional and amateur, influence hip hop culture. The Legendary (maxi-single) is a raw reflection of their diverse style(s). B-Boy Mafia has mastered the art of balancing their sound to cater to the tastes of many assorted listeners by remaining consistent in their production method. New addition to the group Dj Etc describes them as “a breath of fresh air to the hip-hop game.” He explains that “there is a specific science to the way they bring all the elements together to structure a song.” He further emphasizes that “B-Boy Mafia is a progressive new group that allows hip-hop to move forward…their consistent formula of beats that smash and dope lyrics make them a definite good look for the future.”
